I can't remember ever experiencing 107 degrees before the last 3 weeks. I have now experienced 107 degrees 3 times. Humanity is at a crossroad. For humanity to survive and thrive, humanity needs to join with nature and restore wildlife, our oceans, and our biodiversity. And we must limit the burning of fossil fuels. With renewable energy becoming much more of a factor and with the development of battery storage, we can do this. But do we have the will? Think of your children and your grandchildren. Do you have the will? I hope so, I know I do.
I am running for Cape May County Commissioner to begin tackling both local issues, homelessness and affordable housing, and the global fight to save humanity. The economics are clear. Construction costs for a 500MW Combined Cycle Gas Powered plant are 1.1 billion. Construction costs for a similar sized 500MW Utility Scale Solar Farm are 500 million. It costs less than half when going solar. But there is more good news. Construction time for the gas powered plant is at least 6 years. Construction time for the solar farm is a year. It takes a sixth of the time when going solar. This is great news!
I am sharing some important data regarding global environmental trends, a warning for Earth's future, and a recent update on local beach erosion in Ocean City, NJ. Below is a historical overview highlighting the changes in world population, atmospheric carbon levels, and remaining wilderness from 1937 to 2020:
- 1937: 2.3 billion people | 280 ppm carbon | 66% remaining wilderness
- 1954: 2.7 billion people | 311 ppm carbon | 66% remaining wilderness
- 1960: 3.0 billion people | 317 ppm carbon | 64% remaining wilderness
- 1978: 4.3 billion people | 335 ppm carbon | 62% remaining wilderness
- 1997: 5.9 billion people | 363 ppm carbon | 55% remaining wilderness
- 2020: 7.8 billion people | 415 ppm carbon | 35% remaining wilderness
We, humanity, must stop this trend and begin reversing it now. No more delays, the facts are the facts.
A warning for Earth’s future
Hundreds of millions of years after the Permian-Triassic extinction, Earth is facing another climate crisis—this time driven by human activity. As global temperatures climb, marine species are once again stressed by warmer, oxygen-starved waters. The researchers warn that history could repeat itself.
“The bad news is, we are on track for Permian-Triassic levels of warming in worst-case scenario projections,” Sperling said. In the lead-up to the Great Dying, global temperatures rose roughly 14 to 22 degrees Fahrenheit (8 to 12 degrees Celsius) over thousands of years. Today, temperatures are projected to rise 2.7 to 7.2 degrees F (1.5 to 4 degrees Celsius) over just a century or two.
“But the good news is, we’re still at the point where we can change things and do something about it,” Sperling said. On a local level, Ocean City’s beaches have recently suffered severe erosion and dune loss due to two major storms: Hurricane Erin in August and a powerful nor’easter in October 2025.
Key Details of the Beach Damage:
- Dune Loss: Vertical dune erosion of 5 to 10 feet has been reported across Ocean City and neighboring Jersey Shore towns.
- Beach Cliffing: In the north end, dunes were sheared away, creating 10-foot drop-offs.
- Beach Narrowing: Sections from Fifth to 11th Street lost significant sand, leaving the north end particularly vulnerable.
- Flooding: High tides during the nor’easter reached historic highs at Barnegat and Manahawkin bays.
This is just one example of the damage to the Jersey coast line. We need to protect our marshlands, our pinelands, and our beaches. We need new leadership to bring about this protection.
